As a fifth grade student, your child will have the unique opportunity to attend an environmental studies Outdoor School at Collin County Adventure Camp near Westminster, Texas. This program has been in existence since 1971. The Outdoor School program is an eagerly anticipated extension of the district's fifth grade science curriculum. As a school-sponsored trip, your child will be directly supervised by Plano ISD staff and parent volunteers from your child's school. There will be an adult-to-student ratio of one adult for every six students.

The goals and objectives of this unique outdoor program address many of the fifth grade TEKS in a variety of academic areas. The camp experience continues to be a major highlight of each student's fifth grade year. Please be reminded that participation in this program is completely voluntary. If for some reason your child is unable to participate by going to Collin County Adventure Camp, the school will provide alternative lessons that teach the same objectives. This coming school year we estimate 4,000 Plano students, parent volunteers, teachers, and principals will participate in the program.

The fall camp fee for the 3-day, 2-night session is $230 per student, which includes a required $30 registration fee. This fee covers the cost of 6 meals, 2 nights lodging, round-trip transportation, snacks, services of a Plano nurse, and instructional materials.

The success of the environmental camp program continues because of the selfless dedication of our teachers, parent volunteers, and elementary principals. If you are interested in serving as an Outdoor School parent chaperone next fall, please be informed that Plano ISD School Board policy requires a criminal history background check for any person who will accompany students to Collin County Adventure Camp. These background checks will be conducted no less than six weeks prior to the school's scheduled session date.

Background check applications are found online atwww.pisd.edu/volunteer. You may complete this background check anytimeafter July 1st. The selection of cleared parent volunteers rests with each individual school's camp staff. The method of selection is at the discretion of the school principal. Parents will be notified by their home school prior to the scheduled camp date.
